CAPSTONE PROJECT

Artist Statement:

What comes first in your mind when you hear the word 'past'?

Those who breathe and dream the future in present time must have the past.

To some people, the past recalls the moments where they had joy and youth, but to the others, they had to learn the bitterness of the world. No matter how valuable or miserable the moments of the past was, it is the past that made who we are now.

and we discover that existences of the past through the things that are around us;

The photos of the old albums, the words that are written in the journals, the sounds that we listens in the world, and the time that comes and goes by.

I wanted to express those 4 ways of how to recall the past through art.

HOW TO RECALL THE PAST- 4 WAYS

PROJECT #1- THE TIME

We, humans, cannot be separated from 'time' as we live in the past, present and the future. The clocks, they typically represent the time; and the pearls and the crystals, they are pronouns of beauty, but the process in which they are made is never easy, so it represents our lives. The clocks between the pearls and the crystals portrait our time in life as a difficult journey but they at the end, eventually become valuable and beautiful.

PROJECT #2- THE RECORD

I often take out and read my old journals to recall the nostalgic moments I enjoyed in the past. Just like how my journals bring up my memories, the newspapers or the books also bring up the moments in the history. This project, I used the copy of my old journals, newspapers and the magazines to portrait myself which I wanted to contain the message that my old records from the past gathers my existence in this present time.

PROJECT #3- THE PHOTO

Among the many ways to recall the past moments, I think the photos are the most common and convenient way. Once the photo is taken, it could be kept for such a long time. Now the cameras could be accessed very easily, any daily life events could be taken as much as possible. By using the watercolor, I wanted to express the memories as a blurry and dreamy feeling. Also, I tried to show how the blurred memories fit together like puzzle pieces by arranging pictures between the painting.

PROJECT #4- THE SOUND

In life, we are surrounded by so many sounds of the world. With those many sounds, the humans started to create a music which can be defined as the mixtures of the sounds. And some of the music may reminds us of the moments that we have forgotten in the past. For this project, I have used my old CDs that contained my favorites in the time. As the speaker makes the sounds louder and clearer, I wanted to express the memories that I had with the music in the CDs to become clearer.
